The marine industry has been using that type of sequential supercharging for many years. Some of my favorite memories are hanging out with my uncle while he worked on the marine diesel power plants on the tug and offshore tug boats. If you want to see some in action, do a quick search on YouTube for MTU Detroit Diesel marine power plants - big time continuous horsepower.
