Sounds to me like your shifter is not finding the correct position (detent) to allow the reverse gear to be engaged. I doubt this has to do with transmission itself, but with adjusting the shifter housing in some way. If you remove the top plate on the dual gate (assuming dual gate), can you then get it into gear?
