Heres how i see it.

Catagories of racers

1. Below average.
Too lazy to change a wrong converter all season(or valve springs for years). Thats a winter project. If it wont bolt up hes sending it back. $ can be a factor. Mostly its motivation.
2. Average.
Might change the stall on a wrong converter. Would likely source an already proven combo from a vender.
3. Above average effort, still average results or below.
This guy tried hard. But most suffer due to false pride. They insist on picking their own cam or worse yet go to this guy for heads, that guy for intake, buy the cheapest ross pistons they can find thinking they are the same as custom. Same for oil pan etc. This guy is easy to spot. Hes usually saying things like "i know" and "i could do that too if i had your money" or my favorite "its not max effort like yours" and "unlimited budget" excuses
4. High effort. Above average and even max results.
This is high effort. Pays the same as the guy above for a cam, springs etc but gets one that performs much better by creating reltionships with the RIGHT vedors and trusts THEIR recomendation. And does not call all other otions to get their opinions of it. Might swap out the converter 4 times to get it right. An average guy can occupy this catagory with a lot of help and good support from the right guys. If you can fabricate, build engines, body and paint, understand an engine....its achievable on a reasonable budget. The less you can do yourself competently the more $ you need. This line is not always easy to see.
5. Max $
Hire $$$$$$ proven engine builder, chassis builder, have them consult at track.
Order dewco, 2 proflights, bolt together convertors and carbkn fiber shaft.
Note some to my amazement can do this and still screw it up. Some let it go to their head as if they were involved at a level higher than deciding how much to spend.

Also note some very humble hard working guys are a blend of the last two catagories.
