Although it pains me to say this, Danica
was on the lead lap when the incident occurred. I believe she was in about 26th place at the time.
Earnhardt didn't really hit her all that hard (no real damage to her rear or his front) and it wasn't in the corner.
IIRC, Jeff Burton, at the time of the incident, commented that she was "loose" (I use the term "loosely"...

) and had slowed down prior to Earnhardt hitting her (which makes sense as Jr. wouldn't be trying to hit her).
