The pulling and tapping method might work if the wheel was pulled recently and/or not tightened too much when last installed. But sometimes they are really on there, and it takes some pretty serious force to break them loose even with a puller.
My puller is nothing more than a thick round plate with a big bolt threaded in the middle and slotted holes to bolt it up to the column. I bought it long, long ago and used it on just about every make of old cars over the years.
