The older Capitol Records albums, from "Magical Mystery Tour" (1967) on back, all used the Capitol "rainbow label", which was all black, with a rainbow band. When The Beatles formed Apple, they began re-releasing their older records using their new Apple label. If you have one of those, it may be a bit valuable. They weren't in production long.

Many of their 1964-1967 albums got a sales boost in late 1969 when the whole "Paul Is Dead" rumor started, and fans began buying their earlier releases looking for "clues" in their music. Sales of early albums skyrocketed, most of their early material was suddenly back on the charts, now spinning on the Apple label.

Capitol threw a ton of reverb on those early Beatles albums, which they called Duophonic. It was basically a Phil Spector type Wall Of Sound, and The Beatles hated it, but there was nothing they could do about it. Capitol Records was owned by EMI, the label The Beatles recorded for in England, and if Capitol felt this is how they should release their material in America, they had to accept it.

So Capitol felt The Beatles material needed a "boost", and they slathered on echo and reverb. The Beatles were still against stereo, and preferred mono (in their defense, mono does sound better on a single speaker car radio, where as a stereo mix would sound strange coming through a single speaker. The balance would be off, and the vocal may get buried in the mix).

I don't mind the Duophonic sound, but many hate it. As with all Beatles material, they of course re-released the Duophonic versions of the early U.S. Capitol albums a few years ago on CD and vinyl. Most fans in America remember them sounding this way, as that's all they ever heard of The Beatles throughout the 1960's to the later 1980's, when they began releasing true "non-reverb" recordings on CD.
