Saturday is the big day for racing and probably most other activities. The exception might be hitting the swap meet on Friday before things get picked over.
Motels in Norwalk are expensive and get booked up due to proximity to Cedar Point. Since you're coming from CT, you might consider getting a room somewhere between Norwalk and Cleveland. You could save a lot of hassle and $$ since you're not going back & forth for several days.
