I went from a 3 on the tree to a four on the floor in my first pickup.

I left the original column in place and cut the "nub" off where the shift handle was. That was a perfect place to mount the Sun tach (to cover the hole).

I pinned the column in place so that it would not accidentally drop down and prevent me from getting the key out.

Mark is right: if you are not trying to be authentic then it is as easy as cutting a hole in the floor and bolting the shifter on.
