All these are good recommendations especially the ones about a thin piece of stainless. Have used Mr G intakes with the crossover blocked and it burned through. However way you go, do not forget to weld or safety wire the heat riser valve in the open position (or have it removed entirely). If you have headers, disregard this.

pack the crossover ports with balled up aluminum foil...keeps the majority of the most intense heat away from the paint you're trying to protect. Works for me...learned it from an early Hot Rod magazine that claimed it was good for @ 10 hp...I dunno.
