The thing is, most racers make more than one run.
If they have a broken spring, they fix it and make another pass/run.
If they have a problem with the engine they fix it and continue racing.
They don't base their best passes on some useless run.
They don't do a couple passes and call it a year?
Then spout off how they would be faster if they hadn't had any problems?
