I've been told there's less problems with the 69 and up 11 bold timing cover. With that I mean the water pump. My 68 400 block is still the 8 bolt but one of these days I' going to convert it to the 11 bolt timing cover and pump. It'll cool better with less problems because of the impeller on the pump.

You will need the correct divider plates and impeller for the 8 bolt. Read thru this thread. At about Page 22 it gets interesting.
