Dusting this one off...

Having same issue with Hays flywheel - ring gear too far way from starter - enough to lose a few teeth on the ring gear .

I had a hell of a time simply finding ANY Pontiac replacement ring gear - Amazon had one wrongly listed and sent but it was for a BBC (ATP ZA-500). The only gear (ATP ZA-518) I found was Northern Automotive. If it is sent I plan on machining a new block for my Summit ministarter to fit the dimensions pippintook has provided.


Maybe my 440 won't sound like such a piece of crap starting anymore...

post note: measured offset from a few flex plates I had laying around: 0.269", 0.249", 0.223"...

and the Hays came in at 0.420". No wonder the starter teeth only engaged halfway! Curiosity propelled me further and I noted that the Hays piece was slightly less than an inch thick overall - my thought is Hays wanted to make this out of 1" plate as 1-1/4" plate required to do this correctly is much more expensive and that much more time and money to machine.

A thought I just had was what if I took a page out of the flexplate playbook and not press it on all the way, say 0.150" short and stitch weld it with a heliarc?
