That is the reason why on our Prototype Turbo Engine testing, Eric, we have the normal oil filter feeding the engine but we also have a secondary "screened" turbo filter before the Turbo Inlet Line. The screened filter has several hundred times the flow area of the inlet to the Turbo CHRA (Compressor Housing Rotating Assembly) so we do not have a pressure loss across the "Rock Catcher" filter.
When the engine is being run hard, no matter how clean the engine was when it was assembled for dyno testing you will still have material coming off the internals in the engine. Some of that material is large enough to restrict the flow passage in the CHRA and cause a very expensive turbocharger failure. So we try to save the turbo as much as we possibly can with the aux filter feed assy. So far we have never had a Turbo failure with that system installed. Crap does come off engines. Your return filter deal is a good method of catching the stuff that returns back to the tank for sure.
