Factory gears are what most people wanted. It was rare to have a customer special order a car with specific axle ratio. Optional gear ratios were rare by 1971, usually for trailering or towing purposes. Factory GM rear ends are quiet (and warrantied), so unless it was the extremely rare case of a car being special ordered for drag racing, factory gears were selected.

Items that customers may go cheap on were wheels and/or radio because they may want to install aftermarket units.

One nice thing about 1969-1980 Trans Ams, they ALL had posi. Even those 185 hp, 2.41 or 2.56 geared cars from the mid-1970's, or the base 1979-1980 Trans Am with a 301 non-turbo, came with posi. The main reason Trans Ams were always a junkyard hunter's favorite because if they found a TA intact, it had a posi rear end which fit Camaros, Novas, etc.
