I don't think I'd want to buy sight unseen. It's more about having someone (other than the seller) verify that it exists and isn't radically different than represented, before going all the way there myself.
Also, if I have some indication that the seller is legit, I'd be more likely to do something (ie. put down a small percentage of the purchase price) to ensure it's still there when I arrive.
I've done "here's the first $100, if I don't come back at the appointed time, it's yours to keep" type deals locally. A version of that would seem reasonable, if I know the car and seller are for real!
