W.E., you have a glitch in your list, all of the Super Turbines in '64 V8 Tempests were water cooled. The p/ns you list check out with the Inspector's Guide but the 326HO auto was water cooled.
b-man, I am certain the air cooled Power Glide was used in some '64 Tempests with the base 6 cyl engine.
I'm pretty sure somebody here had one and mentioned it some years ago.
It was '64 only and service parts can be found in the MPC.
The Inspector's Guide explains that when the Power Glide was installed with the 215 6 cyl, a secondary trans code of numeral "1" was to be stamped at final assembly, added to the basic engine manifest code so that the trans code would read "Y1" (the auto engine codes were 87Y for the export version, 88Y for the 49 state version, and 89Y for the mid year K24 Calif. closed circuit crankcase vent version).
No need to provide service parts or come up with an identifying trans code if they were never installed.
I have speculated that they were most likely to have been installed at the KC and Balt Plants since those Plants were Chevy operated. But I'm pretty sure those Plants would install the air cooled Super Turbines so it was not an exclusive deal. And I really have no reason to believe the Power Glide was never installed at the home plant or Fremont.
For all I know, it may have been an early year thing although I don't find any indication of that in any documentation I have but I am certain the Power Glide was installed in some '64 Tempests.
So next time somebody says Pontiac never put a Power Glide in a '64 Tempest, you really should say, "except...".
