As others have said make sure that your rubber fuel hoses from the tank are all in good shape. I remember once having this problem too, on another car. But that one would not run at all with the broken hose.

Crank it for 5-10 seconds, then see if you get a pump shot. If not then replace the fuel pump.

I meant that you should check to see if you get an accelerator pump shot by looking into the carb and stroking the throttle. Not sure that loosening the inlet connection is as good a way to check.
Both a cracked fuel hose and a bad pump can cause the same symptom- no gas gets in the carb when cranking.
