I was sitting in 3rd grade class at St. Bernard's in Omaha, Mrs. Faye was the teacher.
Announcement came over the PA, I believe said he had been shot and we were to pray for him. My sisters heard the same in their respective 2nd and 4th grade classrooms.
Don't recall if we got a 2nd announcement that he had died but likely so. I don't remember any tears. I remember that we got Monday off. I remember seeing bits of the funeral procession on the B&W TV at home as I went in and out of the house, I'm sure my mom was watching, don't recall if my dad stayed home from work.
Mostly played outside with friends that day, wasn't really a big deal for us kids.
He might not have been remembered quite so fondly had he served 2 terms, not sure that he would have done better than LBJ with regards to Vietnam.
Celebrities that die young tend to be remembered much more fondly than they probably deserve.
With tongue in cheek, for the conspiracy theorists, I have always said Joe DiMaggio was behind it, avenging Marilyn Monroe's suspicious death.
More important to me was that my GTO had rolled off the assembly line at Fremont 2 days earlier.
