Typically what happens is the little spring and wire that attaches to the plastic parts gets rusty (hangs up) bent or comes loose. That or the plastic tab breaks off. There is no cable there just some linkage. You will have to slither under there to see which it is. It is an easy fix if the white plastic is not broken.
