I'd probably be wondering the same thing David RE: vinyl or no vinyl. I went through the same thing for 10 years while I restored mine. I generally prefer the cleaner look of no vinyl but in my car's case, I'm glad my painter talked me into putting it back. My car, being turquoise interior and turquoise exterior, it needed some relief.
Look at a bunch of photos of VG cars without it and if you like the look better than you like yours, dump it. If not, keep it.
