As far back as 1946-47, GM conducted a "Build a model car and enter in our model contest". That must have been the start of the Fisher Body Craftsman's Guild. Two of my cousins built a model from wood and entered it in about 1947. They recived an "honorable mention", and the model was returned to them. It was not a standard size model but I am sure they had size guidelines.
Neither went into auto design, and both became mechanical engineers and worked at the nuclear design lab, Sandia Laboratory, in Alberqueurque, N.M.

Wasn't there a story with pics floating around the internet a few years ago about a guy who'd built a scale replica of the Fischer Coach for that contest back in the '30s maybe?
