If you're checking the "play" with the rear end hanging, such as on a lift, it may seem to be too long. I've had to jack up the rear on some vehicles to remove the driveshaft. As the rear end drops, the lower control arms swing in an arc, causing the pinion yoke to move forward and tightening up the slack between the transmission and the rear end. This can also be exaggerated by worn control arm bushings or rear shocks that are too long. Just food for Thought.
