I just went through this a little while ago. The needle is pressed on, but after 50 years, does not want to come off too easy. The shaft that it is pressed onto is very fragile and the first one that I tried took the end of the shaft off with it. This of course made the speedometer and the needle unusable.
So with the next one, I carefully applied a little WD-40 to the shaft so that it would run down to the end of the shaft and hopefully into where it was pressed on. After that, I carefully pried it off with a tool that got under the whole needle and pulled it straight off. A screwdriver won't do it, as it only pulls the one side and could break the shaft. I used what we call a "cat's paw", if you know what that is. It takes patience. Good luck.
