The 301 was a good little engine. I had one in my 79 Formula and it ran very well... until my ex didn't bother checking the oil and it threw a rod bearing. If it had had the stronger 301 turbo block with the Quadra jet it would have been even better IMO.

Pontiac is not dead just because they aren't made anymore.. Look at all of them still out there on the streets today. When the very last one is off the highways and laid to rest, then Pontiac will be dead. But I don't think that will happen for many many years to come. Our hobby will make sure of that, or we won't be driving them because gasoline will no long be used to power any transportation.
