Similar situation here. Only thing I sub out is engine machine work. Everything else is done in house here by me, including paint and body, interior, engine, trans and rearend rebuilding etc.. So what ever materials and parts cost, including the cost of the car is pretty much my investment.
Like Dataway, my time doesn't count because on my own personal cars I consider it a hobby that I enjoy doing. I do however make a living at it, in which case I charge labor when doing customer work.
I've never lost money on a car sale, but the reasons stated above are mainly why. Another is that most everything we have here we've bought 20-30 years ago when prices were much cheaper. I hang onto things a loooong time and rarely do I sell anything.
