The coating on the moog stuff may be some kind of sacrificial coating to protect during storage and ease installation. Actually it seems probably too soft to be zinc, could be some kind of cold oxide treatment. It almost feels dusty ... might hold up well if oiled after installation.
Problem with painting them is it will probably get destroyed while installing them.
