As Mike said to prevent damage during loading and unloading. I can tell you, as an ex car hauler that there is very little clearance when you load and unload cars.... especially the Firebirds and Camaros from that era and the newer years too. It wasn't uncommon to load or unload and hear the front bump scrape the pavement a bit. It all depended on the type of trailer used to deliver them. The last trucks with the Cortrel 6 car trailers were the best with no scraping because of the ramps and lower trailer at the rear. The older 7 car trailers were higher and the rear used 2 piece ramps that were steeper and shorter. Depending on where you were delivering those caused the most damage. I can confirm that.
