Yes, permit now need for half dome. I didn't win the lottery but found a back way around that issue by getting a wilderness camping permit at "little yosemite"...automatically got the permit for half dome. Most people were not aware of that. Best hike? "The Narrows" at Zion..top down.Technically 16 miles but about 20 in reality. Permit was required, air temp was 108 and water temp was 51 degrees. Since you are in the river most of the way it was brutal one day hike.
