On items like the heater control, a very similar deal happened on '72 Pontiac A-body models. Not sure I'd try & nail down the style of heater control as an exact 70/71 versus '72 thing, as the control was such a minor detail that supplies often were allowed to dwindle before the new style was used.
Similar deal on the AC control heads and automatic shifter lenses used on '80 Birds, it took a while to transition over to the new style bigger font lenses. My Oct '79 built Turbo SE was one of the very first out of Van Nuys plant after the production delay of turbo cars. It has the style of font of lense on the AC control & the AT selector that were used for many years. The more modern, larger font AC control with the fan symbol & matching larger font auto shifter lense began to be installed in mid November '79 around the same time the first '80 Pacecars were built. Pacecars of course received their own style lenses with the red prism in the end of the lense to diffuse the light with a red glow.
