I think it boils down to lifter bore clearance. The engines I have had noise issues with had less than .002" clearance. I feel engines with more than .002" clearance have sufficient clearance to get enough oil past to satisfy the lifter. The tight ones don't. Recommended lifter bore clearance is .0015"-.0018". Many I measure have .0025" or more, depending on lifter size, which I have seen all over the board with lifters.
