This is how we got our Camaro back to Wisconsin back in 2000 (about 1100 miles round trip) - except I was able to borrow my racing buddies PU and race hauler. That was much cheaper than renting, as my buddy didn't charge me anything (of course I'd helped him build his race car for years and pitted for him - so maybe he still owes me...).

Not knowing what the NY or FL sales tax is - can't say whether it would be better to pay FL tax on the temporary registration (assuming that NY wouldn't try and double dip) if the OP decided to drive the new vehicle home though.
