Yep, in general, take your old valve cover and a good flat surface, pound out the distortion and don't over tighten the bolts and you are good to go. No need for spreaders if you have a good gasket, and an undistorted valve cover.
No excuse at all for cast valve covers to leak, they are very rigid.
