I think the biggest problem I'm having understanding what went on was that I really can't believe the previous owner made such an obvious mistake installing the timing set. Looking at the picture of how it was, it makes no sense that anyone who could do such nice work putting the engine together could make such an obvious mistake.
Stranger things have happened but it seems like a long shot.
