I'm betting you used new lifters. Would you have happened to clean them? If not, that could be part of your 'tick' problem, the packaging lube can harden and make them 'lazy'. Best to always disassemble and clean them before use.

You can run some mild detergent like Marvel Mystery Oil, and in time, it will loosen that stuff up. Just a suggestion.
