We put numbers to settings and tests , data, to compare to known norms , and allow us to duplicate those settings after servicing.
Or if a malfunction occurs, to check if a setting is off from your set point. Ear and eye data is hard to quantify!
You were checking/adjusting cam and ignition timing ...without a TDC reference point when this crazy train left the station..
