"Tuning by ear" is the major reason Dave at SD builds his engine with about a full point compression less than we do. He's had a few of his customers take his engines and let the next door neighbors ex-wife's third cousins live in boyfriend come over and turn the distributor until it sounded better. Everyone is happy for about an hour until all the rod bearings end up in the oil pan.....then they call Dave and start bellyaching about his engine work........FWIW.
I build my engines with higher compression, we also do the carbs and distributors for them. We dyno test them, set the timing/fuel curves for best numbers, then deliver them to the customer along with our exclusive "Arkansas Warranty":
