I'm not arguing for or against Tesla. But your friend is wrong (and obviously doesn't work with electric cars or current battery technology). Going with the facts, Tesla has a lower rate of fires, fatalities, and crashes. The fuel fire percentage rate for gas cars is actually greater than electric cars. You can find horror stories of any car, as well as good ones like below.
