Heart-breaking, to say the least! While it is probably too late, I am guessing there are more salvageable parts than not. I'd say you have a good start on restoring another '66' if you can find one. Regardless of how this all shakes out, there will never be another 235176K609001.... unless .....hmmmm.... $20K would buy a resto-frame. A year from now, she could be back on the road.
Anyway, you have my sympathy. I lost a '67' GTO 400HO HT, 4speed to an out-of-control Karmann Ghia while it was parked in front of my buddy's house. I had blown up the 400HO earlier(running a 4.10 gear) and had just put a crate '71' 455HO in it (and a more streetable gear), that came through Buck Baker's shop. Pontiac was supporting his NASCAR Grand Am effort with pieces back then. I still miss that car!
