Knowing how rough the car was, I'm not buying the "free" story. My guess is somewhere in the middle (60 or so). I'm basing it on that he probably got the parts and chrome at no charge as a trade-off for TV advertising endorsements. But, other than the shop and the owner, who knows.
I too have heard different stories, it seems to me that in some instances you see the cars that have been already built in the background of some of the TV shots as new episodes are filmed, I have seen this often on of the Kindig show. I am sure there is some trade off or discount if your car is chosen to be a TV build and have always wondered how much. It would explain why someone might be willing to pay well over the value for a basket case.
