gtospieg is talking about this number (037374) being the engine unit number. The (XH) is the engine code. See it here. http://www.wallaceracing.com/engine1.htm

John is right, I forgot they didn't start adding a partial vin till 68 although the 400 came out in 67.
Get the PHS papers on the car as suggested to confirm that (engine unit #) is the original engine.


The date code in your pic (J026) October 2 1966 plus the (XH) code means it's a 1967 - 400.



If you follow the link I posted you'll see it's a 1967 - 400ci - 350hp - engine from a Grand Prix.
More than likely your going to find that it is the original engine to the car, how very cool !
I'm going to bet the entire drive line is original to the car... I'm so jealous right now.

The date code for the heads will be under the valve cover, sorry for the confusion.
