Jon, there was a truck driver that stopped here in OH today at the Love's truck stop, Wendy's restaurant from MO. He didn't say where in MO he was from. He said he just got off the phone with his mother, and they had 8 inches on the ground at about 2:00 PM today.
Like Dataway, I grew up near lake Erie (Erie PA,) affected by lake effect snow. I've seen enough snow to last me a lifetime. Down here 6 inches constitutes a snow emergency (never even heard of a snow emergency until I moved here). In Erie if you couldn't get to where you wanted to go, you just waited until you could, or got a 4X4 to get you there.
So far today, all we have is steady rain, but the closing list for Thursday is already long, and getting longer....LOL.
When I lived in Erie PA they didn't close anything for snow until it was at least 8 inches, after it snowed, not beforehand. Our school superintendent (when I was a kid) decided it by this scale. If he could walk from his front porch, to his mailbox (grown man), we had school. I was in 6th grade before we had my very first snow day off from school, about 2 1/2 feet overnight.
Where I live now, (central OH) the snowfall averages 20-40 inches per year. Coming from an area that gets 140-200 inches a year, it's just a minor annoyance for me. No one here knows how to plow snow, or drive in it.
When I lived in Memphis TN, 4 inches of snow would shut down the whole city for a week.....
They have little, to no snow equipment, so they just wait for it to melt.
