The manufacturer (Chicago Pneumatic) answers why you should not keep your air compressor on the original shipping pallet:

The reason mostly hinges on the pallet rotting, and the upright compressor falls over, they also site noise amplification on concrete. Since I bought my current home with 2 compressors left on the premises, I have one shop area with a wooden floor that has the compressor sitting on the wooden floor. It's been in there for at least a decade. The one at my old house has been sitting on the shipping pallet since i bought it new around 2006. The pallet hasn't rotted yet.
