I think there's a number of factors... When you're 18-25 (or even 30)... maybe you like the drone of a loud exhaust and things don't bother you as much. But as you get older, the weight of the world ends up on your shoulders, and you have less time for the subtle nuance of a loud exhaust and a Muncie rock crusher when you're navigating in stop and go traffic.

There's also the fact that, the likelihood of getting into an accident (a fender bender), is significantly greater in the daily grind than it is if you're taking your car out on a Sunday or to blow off some steam with a burnout on a back-road.

For me, I really take care of my cars. Even my 2009 Ford Explorer Sport, which to most people is a "nothing" car...



I LOVE this car. My dad gave it to me... before I get a lot of **** for that though, let me explain. Before I deployed to Afghanistan, I bought my wife a new car, and I donated my old Explorer because I didn't want it sitting around for 6-7 months. When I got back I intended to buy a new (used) car, and my dad had this one, and insisted that I take it. He said... either I trade it in and someone else gets it, or you take it and you save some money. So I took it... and it's a gorgeous car. It has no real value worth speaking of... I mean, what is it... maybe a $5,000 car? But it looks fantastic, drives fantastic, and I love it.

But even this car... which has no intrinsic value... I always park way out in a parking lot because I don't want people opening their doors on my car and dinging it. If I owned a 1974 Pontiac TransAm SD-455 RA4, I sure as hell wouldn't be taking it to work except on rare occasions, like a Friday... and I definitely wouldn't be parking it in the mall parking lot because I wanted to go buy something and hang out in the food court...

If I was driving a Honda Civic... and someone hit me... it would suck, but I wouldn't care all that much so long as insurance took care of it. But if I was in a 74 TransAm, and someone hit me... whole other ball game.

People have definitely gotten softer over the years. And Im not saying technology hasnt helped the world,,it definietly has.but its not all for the better. The younger generation doesnt even know whats its like to grow up with no cell phones,no social media,no 150 channels on the TV. Some might argue those are all good things,,,in some ways yes and some ways no.
