I’ve been thinking about both your dilemma and you originally stated goals for the car. Did you ever consider an LS swap (like your FIL’s car)?

I know LS is not popular here on the board with the pure Pontiac types but they are a lot of bang for the buck, perform well in stock form with OEM reliability and great mileage for a car meant to be driven. It’s not to late to sell your repaired motor and headers to recoup some cash, source a low mileage LS motor and do the conversion.
