Seems there are two scenarios being discussed: 1. priming a carb and 2. supplementing a mechanical pump. To me, priming is of interest but needs little flow so is easier. Goal 2., which OP seems to want, sounds difficult.
As to priming through a mechanical pump, I think they just have simple flapper-type valves on inlet and outlet so should be easy to get some flow if electric pump generates the same low pressure. The check valves in the pump operate just fine with the low pressure the mechanical pump diaphragm generates so should also work with an upstream low-pressure electric.
For priming only, my guess is the impulse pumps will be less likely to overpressure the mechanical diaphragm and offer less restriction to the mechanical pump than a rotary-vane pump.
Pushing high volume through a mechanical pump sounds difficult, if not impossible, without overpressuring the diaphragm in the mechanical. Those check valves are probably what limits the flow. Pushing harder on them will certainly flow more but the higher pressure needed would add risk and complexity.
I like the idea of an empty mechanical pump body with an electric pump doing the real work.
