Sounds like many have done this & the electric pumps do indeed push through the mechanical pump when not cranking or when running... & vice versa that a mechanical will pull through the right type of electric pump.
Ive read about this for years on here and seems to work fine for those that do it, for starting after sitting awhile as well as for added fuel supply when needed.... its not ideal for added fuel supply but it works when set up right.
