The base is arched which smooths air flow into the carb unlike the cheap flat base units where air must make an abrupt 90 degree turn into the carb which causes turbulence. Ues the same 14x3 air filter.

I haven't figured out the source of my interference issue yet but I'm curious how these original "open element" cleaners managed the breather?
How does the breather connect to a 67 GTO air cleaner?
I found this example of what I think is a Chevy base that has a nice solution for the breather on an open element air cleaner:
