I found the flat base is getting whacked by the accelerator pump rod and there is no way to keep it from happening by rotating my air cleaner base.
A thick gasket might provide enough clearance but sounds like a band-aid for a basically poor design.
I am leaning toward replacing this base with one of the "open" style Chevy air cleaner bases that I posted earlier in the thread.
