They turn hazy - and yellowy - with age and exposure.
Can get down right horrible looking.
If a guy tries to take a little mild rubbing compound to one - as soon as it "appears" you have made an improvement - you have actually gone through the coating and the swirl is now smooth or very compromised.
I tried it on a bent up later model bezel years ago , for experiment. fail
Nowadays they say oven cleaner gets the old coating off , then carefully clean and clear coat.
I would start with a junker to practice first.
Believe Randy Combs is the name I have seen associated with restoring them.
