That's kinda how they did me when I retired, only backwards.
We were working on a high level special project from a remote "skunk works" location and told to report to Headquarters the next day (Tuesday).
Nasty winter storm that day, so it was just me and the security guard that made it in. They called and said "don't come in!" (thanks for that) so we tried again the next day.
Everybody was milling around in the lobby and, one by one, folks got called into a conference room.
They had an envelope, a bottle of water, and a box of tissues. The offer was "take it or leave it".
It was much more lucrative than what I was expecting, because I'm just a dumb car guy and I don't pay attention to those things, so I handed over my laptop, my badge and my gun*.
I like to say "it was the best decision I never made".
First time I was unemployed in 40 years. I didn't quite know what to do - so I went out and had a nice breakfast.

*Ok - I didn't really have a gun. I've been watching too many crime dramas where the detective gets suspended, I guess.
